Wigan bus station opens to public

Wigan’s new £15.7m bus station, designed by Austin-Smith:Lord with Mott MacDonald and delivered by Vinci, has been opened two months ahead of schedule.

The facility has been delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester in partnership with Wigan Council, funded by Greater Manchester’s Local Growth Fund.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “There is a clear ambition for Wigan to become a key urban centre in Greater Manchester and this new development will support the area’s regeneration.

“The public’s feedback on the bus station so far has been fantastic – it is clearly a huge improvement on what went before.

“A fully-functioning and accessible public transport system is absolutely central to the economic prosperity of the city-region.”

Cllr David Molyneux, leader of Wigan Council, added: “This is such an important project for Wigan, greatly contributing to our transformation of the town centre and I’m delighted it is now open to the public.”

The bus station includes live bus departure displays, a newsagent, improved pedestrian links to the town centre and covered cycle parking.

Part of the roof is made up of the ETFE material also used on interchanges at Bolton, Rochdale and Altrincham, as well as at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Wigan council “BEDROOM TAX/HOMELESS PEOPLE STARVING AND DESTITUTE”!!!.
Still nothing to worry about Wigan can brag about its new £15:7million pound bus station, oh and they have just put the PRICES UP AGAIN AND WERE THE MUGS PAYING FOR IT SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!!!!.

By Steve D "Wigan Lancashire".

It wouldn’t have been needed if they hadn’t made a total dog’s dinner of the previous one they built in the 80’s !

Tha’ knows – what’s your point?

The “they” who were responsible for the 1980s station are highly unlikely (to say the least) to be the same “they” who have done a great thing 30 years later. “The council” isn’t an inorganic eternal unit – the people involved then are likely retired/dead now.

Thankless task working for a Council it seems. Well done Wigan and TfGM

What’s point of new bus station. When shopping centre is none existent.

By Jamespennington@blueyonder.co.uk

Which shopping centre is non-existent, James? The one that exists? Hmm.

Access to jobs outside of Wigan? Investing in the town? Making it more attractive to employers? These don’t strike you as worthwhile?

How’s your Blueyonder broadband treating you anyway, old timer?

I do nott like the new bus station for 3 reasons 1 having to pay 20p to use the disabled toilet if you haven’t got a disabled key plus the flooriing is not up to scratch ie elderly people& disabled people may slip or fall if wet &the way the buses are set out

Quite nice. Good scale, nice detailing, nice materials, blends well with existing townscape. 7/10.
