Third attempt for Church Inn redevelopment
Developer Alumno Group has resubmitted its plans for student halls on the site of the former Church Inn on Cambridge Street in Manchester.
The nine-storey building would have 62 rooms and would feature a pocket park to the west of the building.
A previous version of the plans were first refused in April, and then again in August.
The proposed scheme, for a stepped 12 and three-storey building with 82 rooms, drew various criticisms from the planning committee at the time, including descriptions of the scheme as like “Jason and the Argonauts” and “a giraffe amongst hamsters,” due to its height.
Alumno is now partnering with Places for People to bring forward the revised project, delivering affordable student accommodation.
The pub closed in 2016 after the owners were unable to find new management. According to the application, “since the closure of the pub, the site has attracted anti-social behaviour, vandalism and drug-taking.”
The agent for the scheme is GL Hearn, with Turley as the planning consultant and interior design provided by Ben Kelly Design. The architect was Carson & Partners.

A dull scheme for a dull street. They’d be better with just re-opening the pub – it would at least provide a bit of life.

Is this shunting out even further into the footway than the existing pub? The giraffe needs to wind its neck in.
The main issue at this junction is the crap southbound cycle provision. MCC recently repainted the woeful existing routing to reinforce their ineptitude. Needs the Bee Network treatment.

This is one of the ugliest schemes I have seen proposed in Manchester in some time. Utterly woeful and a disservice to the architectural profession. If this is an improvement on rejected schemes, I would hate to see what came before.

It seems to me that the planners in Manchester will accept anything that’s put before them.This one is a particularly bad design.The thing is the people of Greater Manchester will have to live with these building for the next century.My Grandad probably had a pint in the Church Inn and will be spinning in his grave when he sees this.
