Carlisle allocates £19.7m Town Deal funds
The money will support seven projects within the city, including the Southern Gateway regeneration, and is part of a wider 10-year investment plan.
Carlisle was one of eight North West communities to secure funding from the Government’s Towns Fund in March of this year, after applying in October 2020. The others are Bolton (£22.9m), Cheadle (£13.9m), Leyland (£25m), Preston (£19.9m), Rochdale (£23.6m), Southport (£37.5m) and Workington (£23.1m).
Among the projects supported with the Town Deal money is the addition of 9,558 sq ft of space at the Citadels for business interaction and accommodation, which is linked to the University of Cumbria’s campus development. Other projects receiving funding include the Carlisle Market Hall’s infrastructure improvement, Tullie House Museum’s entrance creation, and the City Centre Library’s digital and community learning hub refurbishment.
Carlisle will also designate £6.6m for improvements to sustainable travel in its Southern Gateway area, including the town’s railway station.

- Start with the Park, St Cuthbert’s Garden Village: £2m
- Project Tullie: £918,000
- Lighting Up Carlisle: £620,000
Carlisle and the surrounding area have received more than £250m in investment in the past few months, including £9.1m from the Future High Street Fund. Carlisle received £70m from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal for its Carlisle Station Gateway and Citadels projects as well.
“This is great news for the city and will help us grow and support our businesses and communities coming out of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Cllr John Mallinson, the leader of the Carlisle City Council. “The Town Investment Plan is a blueprint for the next ten years and will drive forward Carlisle in the future.”
