Pemberton Colliery homes out for consultation 

Housebuilder Northstone, part of developer Peel L&P, is seeking local residents’ views on its plans to build 268 homes on a 29-acre former colliery site in Wigan. 

Residents have until 14 October to lodge their feedback on the scheme at Pemberton Colliery, which is to include a mix of two, three- and four-bedroom homes, 13% of which would be affordable. 

More than seven acres of the site will be given over to green space, with maintained woodland habitat and pedestrian and cycle routes, according to Northstone. 

Additionally, the project would include a link road connecting Billinge Road to Smithy Brook Roundabout, running along the southern boundary of the site. 

In July, Wigan Council granted Northstone outline consent to redevelop the site, previously allocated for employment use under the council’s local plan. 

Northstone is also plotting homes in Bolton, Pendle and Ellesmere Port

The land has been vacant since the colliery closed in 1959 and a report by Aherne Property Consultants argued that the site holds little appeal for industrial development. The land has since been deemed suitable for a residential scheme. 

Northstone is hoping to submit a reserved matters application by the end of this month, ahead of a start on site in mid-2021. Barton Willmore is the planning consultant for the development. 

Bernadette Barry, development manager of Northstone, said: “We are committed to engaging with local people regarding our proposals for the former Pemberton Colliery site.  

“Our aim is to create a sense of community among new residents, while ensuring that our homes are integrated with the existing local community.” 

Northstone is currently on site delivering 150 homes in Westhoughton and has lodged plans for a further two schemes in Bolton, totalling 260 homes, as well as 239 homes in Pendle and a further 216 in Ellesmere Port.
