Oldham’s 21,500 sq ft climbing facility opens

Designed by Aew Architects with works by Conlon Construction and overseen by Dooley Associates, Summit Up has finished four weeks ahead of schedule.

Located off Egerton Street, the climbing gym has 100 different climbing routes, two official speed walls and a two-tier floating boulder.

Summit Up was funded by the Stoller Charitable Trust and all profits generated by it will go back to the charity.

“We are proud to have played our part in delivering this landmark project in Oldham,” said Darren Lee, commercial director for Conlon Construction. “It’s a spectacular building that will open doors for so many people – not just through climbing but also through the vital funds it generates.”

Plans for the Oldham climbing centre were approved in December 2019. Construction began in October 2020, with construction finishing in June. It took three months to fit out the building with climbing equipment and the walls, which were designed by Entre-prise. Entre-prise supplied the climbing walls for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Summit Up officially opened to the public on 30 September.
