Adam Khan’s Brockholes misses out on Stirling shortlist
There are no North West projects competing for this year's RIBA Stirling Prize, despite the popularity of the visitor centre near Preston, which won a national poll by Architects Journal magazine.
The RIBA Stirling Prize is now in its seventeenth year; the 2012 winner will be announced at a special event in Manchesteron Saturday 13 October.
The shortlist is:
- The Hepworth, Wakefield, by David Chipperfield Architects
- Lyric Theatre, Belfast, by O' Donnell + Tuomey
- Maggie's Centre, Gartnavel, Glasgow by OMA
- London Olympic Stadium by Populous
- New Court, London by OMA with Allies and Morrison
- Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge by Stanton Williams
The £8.6m Brockholes Visitor Centre came first in a vote by 400 subscribers to AJ, with 38.5%.
The floating public attraction, set in estuary wetlands, was funded by the North West Development Agency, landowner Lancashire Wildlife Trust and the Forestry Commission. The separate buildings contain a shop, restaurant, classroom and conference room. Mansell Construction and Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering were the main contractors.
Khan's project was one of three in the North West that won national RIBA Awards in June, along with Festival House, Blackpool by dRMM Architects and North House, Bowdon, Trafford by Roger Stephenson Architects. All three went forward into the Stirling longlist but did not make it through to the final.
