‘Ciao for now’: Rosso Manchester has fed its last celeb
After 14 years at the top of King Street, the Italian restaurant has announced its immediate closure in a move that came as a shock to punters and the city’s hospitality industry.
Speculation about the reasons for the closure has now begun, with rumours circulating that another Italian restaurant, Cibo, could take over the space.
Rosso was a popular dining spot for celebrities from its opening in 2009, the year The Italian Food Company – the firm that owns the restaurant – acquired the 20-year lease on 43-45 Spring Gardens.
The company – owned by the Kamani family and former Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand – has decided not to renew the lease, which expires this November, according to Land Registry.
While the current macroeconomic climate means running a hospitality business is tricky at present, Rosso insists it is going out at the “height of its popularity”.
It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of our Rosso Restaurant & Bar. Last night, after nearly 14 years, we were delighted to hold a final service for our wonderful customers. pic.twitter.com/8cQxfNJnBd

A statement published by Rosso’s team last night said: “It wasn’t an easy decision to close this wonderful restaurant, which has flourished into an icon of the Manchester restaurant and social scene.
“It feels like the right time to go out at the height of our popularity and look ahead to new horizons.”
The statement added: “Rosso wouldn’t have been the same without our wider family, suppliers, and loyal customers whom we have had the enviable pleasure of serving.
“We always believed we should go out on a high and we thank each and every one of you for being part of our championship team.”
A shame as it was one of Manchester’s best restaurants but Cibo are taking over, Cibo in Hale is Manchester’s best restaurant, it will be very busy.

Nothing against Rosso but I feel the food scene in Manchester has moved on so much in the last 14 years. Some amazing restaurants now. Just shows the strength of the city as well if the building is already going to be taken over. I just hope Cibo keep the Christmas lights

This building is a perfect place for a big restaurant. We need some big global names.

Cibo is excellent so can imagine them being a great fit for here. I was in Rosso a couple of months ago – it was still great as a place. I’ve never eaten there though.
The restaurant scene has come on in leaps and bounds in the city since Rosso opened so can see why they are bowing out now.
