Application in for 14-acre Morecambe battery scheme

Cragside Energy has applied to Lancaster City Council seeking consent to build an energy storage system on a site north of Bay Gateway to the east of Heysham.

The battery storage proposal will distribute stored renewable energy to the grid at times of high demand, reducing energy shortages. it would have an export capacity of 90MW.

At the 14-acre site, 120 battery enclosures, 30 inverters, a customer transformer, switchgear, and a substation control room are all planned.

Access roads and infrastructure also form part of the plans.

A planning application was submitted on Cragside’s behalf by planning consultant Pegasus Group.

Cragside Energy launched in 2021 with the primary objective of the firm “to support the UK’s transition towards net zero carbon emission”, through cost-effective energy grid integration.

In total, Cragside has more than 600MW of energy storage projects across England and Scotland.

The project’s team includes RSK, Bowland Ecology, CEL, Prime TP, and InAcoustics.

A similar scheme proposed by Voltis in Trafford was approved at appeal this week after the planning inspector reviewing the scheme concluded the site could be classed as grey belt.
