Aldi launches consultation for Congleton expansion
The food retailer is seeking to increase its presence in Cheshire, eyeing up a new site off Viking Way to create a 13,300 sq ft store.
Aldi’s proposals form part of a larger mixed-use masterplan for the 55-acre Congleton site, which Clowes Developments acquired from Richborough Estates in March 2021.
Richborough Estates was granted outline permission for a 20,500 sq ft supermarket there in 2021.
Aldi’s store would be delivered alongside a 1,800 sq ft drive-thru and 3,700 sq ft retail terrace to create a local centre, making up the fourth phase of the development.
Other phases could deliver up to 175 homes, 36,800 sq ft of offices, and 219,500 sq ft of industrial.
Proposals for the supermarket include 133 customer parking spaces, including eight accessible, nine parent and child, and 16 cycle bays.
Four electric vehicle charging points would also be installed, as well as additional provisions for more to be added in the future.
Bryn Richards, Aldi’s regional property director, said: “The current cost-of-living crisis means customers are looking for better-value products, and as the UK’s leading and cheapest discount supermarket, Aldi believes it has an essential role to play in providing high-quality products at affordable prices.
“We encourage all local residents to visit our virtual exhibition and let us know their thoughts on our plans.”
The consultation on Aldi’s proposals will run until Friday 26 May and can be accessed at aldiconsultation.co.uk.
More about the plans for the wider site can be found by searching for application number 19/5596C on Cheshire East Council’s planning portal.
This month, work started on phase three of the scheme to deliver a 102,000 sq ft industrial unit.
Be good if it was tied to a local recycling/refuse centre for all the packaging it will generate! Not holding out any hope! 🙁

Great, just what we need here in Congleton…another Aldi.
It is a shame that Congleton Residents are not given more choice of the supermarket retailers, such as Netto, Sainsbury’s or Waitrose. Above all else, what Congleton really needs to support the extensive residential housing developments are services, such as health/medical centres and schools.

At last, a supermarket to compete against the abysmal Morrisons. Not everyone in Congleton has a car so it is almost impossible to do a major “shop” each week at the nearest Aldi in West Heath.

Think the proposed new Aldi in Congleton is a very good move. The one at West Heath has a problem parking situation and is difficult to get to for many people. We were dismayed when the one in the Town centre was closed. Will you please include toilet facilities in the new shop. Thank you.
