Aldi Rochdale plans approved

Rochdale Council has granted planning permission for a retail scheme on the former Carter Brothers site in Mellor Street.

On completion the project will include a 18,000 sq ft Aldi foodstore and a 3,000 sq ft flexible-use retail unit, as well as 113 car parking spaces, vehicular accesses, and hard and soft landscaping. The scheme will provide a developer contribution towards improvements to the town centre's public realm.

HOW Planning acted as planning consultant for the retailer, while The Harris Partnership was the architect.

Daniel Brown, principal planner at HOW Planning, said: "We look forward to seeing this important site being redeveloped, after lying vacant for nearly a decade. The significant investment proposed by Aldi will not only enhance the visual appearance of the town centre's western fringe but will also create local jobs and further enhance consumer choice within Rochdale's food retail sector."

The store is due to be open by autumn 2015.
