Ancoats garage could become walk-through marketplace
The single-storey Manchester structure is owned and operated by Blossom Motors as a car repair shop, but the firm wants to convert it into a indoor market space.
Proposals for Blossom Market reimagine the garage as eight self-contained and secure units off a central corridor, which would provide access from Gun Street through to Henry Street.
In designs put forward by Atelier MB, the architect for the scheme just off Great Ancoats Street, each unit would have a large, glazed façade and have space for breakout seating at its front.
In total, the units would offer 2,500 sq ft of commercial space, averaging around 275 sq ft per unit, the largest of which would be 590 sq ft.
A proposed sliding window fronting Henry Street would likely be preferred by a takeaway food operator, as it would enable service from a public-facing window.
Redmore Environmental assisted with the application, which can be viewed using the reference number 141792/FO/2024 on Manchester City Council’s planning portal.
Ancoats has emerged over the last decade as one of Manchester’s busiest districts, with a booming F&B offer spilling over from the Northern Quarter. Plans approved in February for 900,000 sq ft of government offices at the former Central Retail Park mark the next phase for the area’s resurgence.
