Barrowford Booths open for business
Booths Supermarkets has opened its 30th store in the North West in Barrowford, East Lancashire, designed by Wilson Mason & Partners.
The 25,000 sq ft building set into the hillside was designed to reflect Booths' sustainable ethos of supporting local communities through the development of stores which reflect locality, context and materials.
The development site is in Halstead Lane on the side of a hill which slopes down to Pendle Water, next to a conservation area. The plot was previously occupied by a care home and mill.
The store has a net retail area of 10,000 sq ft with additional support accommodation, including a 3,000 sq ft first-floor tea shop.
Materials used on the project include zinc cladding, coursed ashlar, cropped-face stonework and galvanised steel.
A number of trees have been planted across the store car park to maintain a "green link" between the surrounding residential areas and the adjacent park.
Interserve build the scheme, while Cundall was the structural engineer, S C Horsfield the mechanical engineer, Greenway Electrical the electrical engineer, Telford Hart Associates the quantity surveyor, Hamilton-Clark refrigeration advisor, Hann Tucker Associates acoustics, NJSR cost management, and Turner Lowe Associates the traffic engineer.

What a fantastic project! We were delighted to be involved as part of the Booths’ team as the Main Contractor. The photographs look great as well.

Booths are to be commended yet again for their commitment to good design. They support smaller and local producers and are streets ahead of other retailers which is why Booths goes from strength to strength. We can all rightly be proud of this north west company.
