Bury mosque to get major refresh

The half-acre site at 52 Bury Old Road in Prestwich has hosted an Islamic centre for more than 25 years.

Plans submitted to Bury Council by Prestwich Muslim Welfare Trust detail the construction of a replacement building for the Masjid E Bilal Islamic centre, which would increase the total floorspace available to worshippers by 7,900 sq ft.

Before any construction may start, the current 5,000 sq ft building will need to be demolished.

Across three storeys, the replacement Mosque would provide amenities such as a library, purpose-built segregated classrooms, and a social space with a diverse range of uses.

The social space could be used as a dedicated hall for children’s assemblies, women’s and men’s group activities, elderly group activities, school visits, and multi-faith group visits for community integration purposes.

Outside the Mosque, 18 car parking spaces have been proposed.

Lumitekton has designed the new build and interior layout. Prestwich Muslim Welfare Trust has been assisted in its application by agent RTPI.

The project’s team also includes Iain Tavendale Arboricultural Consultant, Pennine Ecological, Reford Consulting Engineers, Smith Marston, SCP Transportation Planning, Amni Transportation, and Martin Environmental Solutions.

Gorgeous! such an iconic structure for Bury.

Sorry but that looks absolutely awful. No objection to the physical use, but that is a really tacky design that will be coated in exhaust fumes on this busy road. It will also look into the houses adjacent.

Love the use of all the glass.

Just a shame it’s squashed up against that wall/fence on the left. Could’ve planted some bushes and trees to make the site really majestic, but obviously the trade off is the loss of parking spaces to the right.

Is there enough parking for Fridays.

That building is completely inappropriate for the area.

No thought for the neighbours. It’s too big and it’ll cause even more congestion

Not appropriate for the area. Overpowering and a traffic problem in already congested area.

Huge, domineering and completely inappropriate for the site. A firm thumbs down.
