Construction starts on Penwortham Bypass

Work has started on the £17.5m Penwortham Bypass, a dual carriageway linking the A59 Liverpool Road to the A582, due to complete in 2020.

The project, funded by the £434m Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal, is being delivered by the City Deal’s in-house highways team.

The bypass will run along the South West of Penwortham, and will connect to the existing Broad Oak roundabout. Once the bypass completes, work will start on improving public realm and access to Penwortham town centre. Options for a bus priority route on the A59 will also be considered following construction of the bypass.

School playing fields at All Hallows Catholic High School will be relocated and improved as part of the bypass work, providing them with improved drainage and better access from the school.

Plans for the bypass were granted in September 2017, and preparatory works to create a temporary footway and cycleway at the Broad Oak roundabout are already well under way.

Construction of the road is expected to take around 20 months.

The City Deal is supported by the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Preston City Council, South Ribble Council, and Lancashire County Council, alongside central government and the Homes & Communities Agency.

Let’s hope this has a positive impact on Liverpool Road and Penwortham Town centre – more leisure opportunities and improved retail offering. Danger is if Sainsbury proceeds is will just replace diverted traffic.

Turn left off A59 and over the river somewhere. Now there will be more traffic on the A582. And its bad now, just like the traffic lights at Lostock Hall.

Running a bypass between 3 schools where young children will be breathing in car fumes cannot be good.
