Council leader Leese steps down from role

Sir Richard Leese has temporarily stepped down from his position as leader of Manchester City Council.

Leese was arrested on Monday and cautioned for allegedly assaulting his stepdaughter, before being released just before 7pm last night.

Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester City Council, said: "Sir Richard Leese has written to Manchester City Council asking for a period of time out from his duties as leader of the council to resolve family issues. We respect this decision. During this period, his duties will be carried out by the deputy leaders of the council."

The council could not say when Leese is likely to return to the role, but did mention that he has also asked for his special responsibility allowance to be suspended during this period.
