Great Sankey Leisure Centre revamp gets go-ahead
The £16m redevelopment of the Great Sankey Leisure Centre is set to start on site later this year, after it was approved by Warrington Council.
The scheme is being brought forward by LiveWire and Warrington Council.
The 65,000 sq ft facility, designed by Walker Simpson Architects, will include a 120 station fitness suite, upgraded swimming pools, playing pitches, sports hall, group exercise studios, outdoor functional training frame, library, café, retail outlets, trim trail and heritage trail. There will also be a health wing providing medical services to west Warrington residents, along with a pharmacy and business zone offering meeting spaces.
The building will also host cultural events working in partnership with LiveWire’s sister company Culture Warrington.
Later phases plan to incorporate a spa with treatment programmes and facilities to promote well-being.
The project is set to open in autumn 2016.
Services at the facility will be delivered by LiveWire, Warrington Council, Culture Warrington, the NHS, Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group and Health Plus.
Jan Souness, managing director at LiveWire, said: “This new neighbourhood hub will make a real difference to the lives of people in west Warrington by allowing them to access leisure, health and cultural services all under one roof. It was important to make this LiveWire’s first dementia friendly facility to cater for a growing and older population in the area.”
