Halton approves solar farm spanning area the size of 15 football pitches
The installation of more than 7,200 solar panels on a 27-acre brownfield site north of Ditton Road in Widnes has been greenlit by Halton Council.
After a 13-week set-up, Horizon Power and Energy’s solar microgrid will more than quadruple the capacity of an adjacent grid which was completed in 2020, providing an energy generation capacity of approximately four megawatts-peak.
The solar farm will be operated by Halton Council and will serve local facilities and amenities.
Plans were submitted on Horizon’s behalf by Renplan Planning Consultants.
The site in question was formerly St Michael’s golf course before being allocated for employment uses within the Halton Local Plan.
Previously used for waste services, the land is known to be contaminated, as such representing a significant viability challenge for any redevelopment for employment uses.
The project team includes Woodland and Countryside Management, FPS, Pager Power, Amalgam Landscape, Etive Ecology, Maptec Surveys, Alpha Associates, Corun Associates, and Caulmert.

What a waste of taxpayers/consumers money – this country has one of the worst environments/weather for solar
