Issas secure Burnley industrial consent at second attempt

Monte Blackburn, the billionaire brothers’ development business, has been granted permission to build three units off Magnesium Way in Hapton, close to Junction 9 of the M65.

The Burnley scheme was reworked following refusal in 2022 on the basis that two of the sheds were too tall.

Monte attempted to have that refusal overturned but the Planning Inspectorate sided with Burnley Council.

Monte’s then revised development, which provides the same 100,000 sq ft of combined floorspace, addressing the concerns about height.

The project will be delivered across nine acres of brownfield off adjacent to Burnley Bridge Business Park that Monte acquired from Leeds-based developer Eshton in 2021.

At the same meeting, Burnley Council approved plans from the Environment Agency for improved flood defences in Padiham. A range of interventions are planned within a 28-acre area that was badly impacted by Storm Desmond in 2015.

The scheme includes raised linear defences along both sides of the River Calder, a flood embankment at the former Baxi site, parapet strengthening at Padiham Bridge, removal of the existing footbridge at Lune Street and replacement with a new bridge including a permanent footpath diversion.

Jacobs is advising the EA on the plans.
