Joseph James to open in old St Helens Wilko

The furniture outlet will move into the 30,000 sq ft store facing Baldwin Street after a refurb.

Set to open in less than four weeks, the move will breathe life back into one of St Helens’ largest retail spaces.

The site has been unoccupied since homeware store Wilko moved out in September 2023 after going into administration that summer.

It was marketed in November last year by Cheetham Mortimer and made available for a minimum lease term of 10 years at a rent of £175,000 per year.

The agent also offered the freehold at a price of £1.5m. According to the land registry, the building was last sold in 2019 for £3.4m.

Last year, Joseph James Furniture took up a 90,000 sq ft tenancy at Stockport’s Debenhams after the retailer went bust in 2021.
