MIPIM | ION picked for £25m Maghull Health Park expansion
A facility for researching mental illnesses and a 320,000 sq ft science park are planned at the 100-acre NHS site, which forms part of Liverpool City Region’s life sciences investment zone.
Maghull Health Park is in line for a huge expansion under plans drawn up by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and backed by Liverpool’s £160m investment zone award.
The trust has selected ION Developments as development manager for the project.
Steve Parry, managing director of ION Developments, said: “Backed by investment zone support, the Maghull project could be well positioned to become a gateway for investors and innovators to transform the future of mental health provision and accelerate product development.
“We are pleased and excited to be working alongside Mersey Care to explore the best ways to deliver this outstanding project.”
Phase one of the expansion of the health park, located off Junction One of the M58, will comprise a Mental Health Digital Research Centre.
The MHDRC will aim to improve mental healthcare, open up avenues to increase access to treatment and improve outcomes for patients.
It will feature interactive spaces, augmented reality labs, and accommodation.
The second phase of the scheme proposes the creation of a 320,000 sq ft science park on an adjoining 24-acre site.
This element of the expansion would see the creation of accommodation for medical research and attract businesses at “the leading edge of digital and virtual reality technologies” according to a Liverpool City Region investment zone prospectus.
Gilling Dod is the architect leading on design.
A spokesperson for Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust said: “The trust has commissioned Ion via a development management agreement to undertake an initial feasibility study for the potential development of a Mental Health Digital Research Centre on the Maghull Health Park site.
The bid for funds from Liverpool City Region Investment Zone (and others) will dictate the development schedule for this exciting project. Ion will develop the business case and will include the submission of a planning application later this year to Sefton Council once funding has been agreed.”

This will bring many welcome jobs to the area, the new station at Maghull North is already well used and trains can get very full, Merseyrail need longer trains here to cope with the raised demand ,which looks inevitable .

All very well but this area is still lacking a much needed walk-in centre.
