Mulbury lines up contractors for New Cross schemes
GMI Construction is to build projects on Oldham Road and Bendix Street while the developer will self-deliver a third project in the Manchester neighbourhood, a 73-apartment complex on Goulden Street.
Developer Mulbury secured approval for the three schemes, which total 378 apartments and are all designed by Tim Groom Architects, at the end of 2020.
Mulbury City, the company’s city centre development arm, is now close to finalising the agreement with GMI to deliver 305 of the units across two 12-storey developments.
One block – containing 161 apartments – will be constructed on the corner of Bendix Street and Oldham Road, while the other, a 144-flat complex, will occupy a site off Oldham Road and Adderton Street.
Both projects are expected to be completed by summer 2023, according to a construction management statement prepared by GMI.
On Goulden Street, Mulbury Homes, part of the wider Mulbury group, will build an eight-storey apartment block incorporating the listed former fire station at the site.
Other Mulbury schemes in Manchester include the completed Excelsior Mill in Castlefield, Blossom Street in the Northern Quarter, and The Astley on Great Ancoats Street. Tim Groom Architects also designed these projects.
Elsewhere in New Cross, construction of developer Far East Consortium’s 80-home scheme on Addington Street is due to start this month.
FEC’s in-house contracting arm DEX Construction is to build the nine-storey block.
Gotta love a bit of Tim Groom! Goulden Street is superb

New Cross is going to be amazing, some of the builds are top quality, like a quarter you would get in a European capital. A great extension to Ancoats which is fantastic imo. All the council need to do now is sort the pavements in the NQ out and this will be a fantastic part of town.

WOW. This is what contemporary Manchester development looks like. Developers who love multi-coloured plastic cladding panels should take note!

I’m a huge fan of the Goulden Street Project. New Cross is really going to blossom in the next couple of years.

Great to see, 378 affordable homes.

Tim Groom is a wonderful architect. Please can all developers use them

This is the only New Cross scheme worth looking at. The others are bland and the one that has just been built fronting Oldham Road looks like a 1970s Costa Del Sol hotel – really appalling architecture.

Couldn’t agree more with WOWs comment, you only have to look to the other end of great Ancoats street to see what they are talking about. Mulbury setting a new benchmark in Manchester, fantastic to see.

Excellent designs especially the Goulden Street scheme however this does have to get through the planning committee which recently seems to prefer blandness over excellence.

Very impressive design work. This should set the standard that the folks who live there deserve. Property, accommodation ain’t cheap.

These schemes look great, lets hope the brickwork parts aren’t ruined by the use of terrible precast panels.

Some inspirational designs happening in this area now ,only the churlish would say otherwise .
