University of Salford targets 2026 opening for health building

Contractor Kier will start work in late October on the 60,000 sq ft facility for healthcare courses, designed by AHR and earmarked for the Frederick Road campus.

The project programme is targeting completion in autumn 2026.

Approval was granted by Salford City Council in June. The project team also includes Avison Young, BDP, Hann Tucker Associates, OOBE, Eckersley O’Callaghan, Curtins, and Aecom as project manager and cost consultant.

To be built on the Mary Seacole Building car park close to Salford Crescent station, the facility will offer a health and wellbeing hub at the heart of the University of Salford estate. It will be the home for courses in podiatry, prosthetics and orthotics, sports rehabilitation, occupational therapy and sport science.

In addition, any Salford staff or students delivering health and wellbeing activities will be able to use the space, while the building is to be a community focus for public services delivered by university partners, with plans now being explored for mother and child health sessions, weight management clinics and other wellbeing forums.

Prof. Vicky Halliwell, deputy dean at the universty’s school of health and society, said: “Our health building will be one of the gems in the expanding University of Salford estate.

“Every year we train thousands of students to work in the healthcare sector in both the NHS, social care and beyond. Now our academics, students and researchers will be able to enjoy their time in Salford even more, in our state-of-the-art teaching environment.”

The all-electric building will target BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold building standards, with features including a roof space and terraces, as well as a daylight-flooded atrium and extensive indoor planting.

The university will start the process of finding a name for the building in the coming months. It will be part of the institution’s school of health and society, the largest school in the university with more than 8,400 students.
