Consent secured for Warrington rooftop extension

County Planning and Dove Architecture have obtained planning permission for a rooftop terrace to be built at the Treasury Building in Warrington’s Palmyra Square.

The rooftop restaurant and bar extension to the grade two-listed building is to be built for Italian restaurant San Lorenzo, and will overlook Museum Street, part of the town’s conservation area.

The proposals have undergone several design iterations to reach agreement with the planners, County said. Rooftop extensions and outside seating areas have been contentious within the borough in recent years, with several proposals in food and drink hotspot Stockton Heath being refused consent, including Olive Tree brasserie in the former Lloyds bank in June 2018.

Dan Matthewman, director at County Planning, said: “The approval follows months of negotiation with the planners and meticulous work with the principal designer at Dove to bring to life the client’s vision for the scheme. Every detail, right through to the lighting design had to be considered and justified in our submissions.

“We were pleased to achieve this permission after only eight and a half weeks of deliberation and without any pre-commencement conditions.”

Derry Edwards, Director of Dove Architecture & Interiors said: “We were delighted to put together this contemporary scheme that contrasts the traditional listed building with the modern look of zinc and brick cladding. This latest design adds to our growing number of approved schemes in areas with historic buildings and shows one area of our expertise. We love making historic buildings work for their modern day uses.”

San Lorenzo opened in 2018 at the buildings, which also houses other restaurants and sits alongside the Parr Hall. Construction work on the extension is expected to get under way next month.

Very strange image to put up! Totally characterless, almost looks like a storage space. Looks as though very little thought has gone into this.

Hope it’s going to look better than that
