Oldham pub bulldozed to make way for new town gardens

Progress has been made in the project to transform a gateway to Oldham’s town centre into a landscaped public space.

Snipe Gardens has been named after the 130-year-old Snipe Inn pub, which has been demolished to make way for the project.

The approximately 13,000 sq ft site will be a “vibrant” garden in the town centre and will act as a community space, according to Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council.

The site will have a pathway connecting Oldham bus station to Henshaw Street, which will open quick routes to the town centre.

Planit is the landscape architect behind the proposals, which will have both soft and hard landscaping as well as the introduction of 28 trees.

The park will be illuminated with street lighting to improve safety.

Shah said: “We are creating a town that is clean, green, and easier to get around.

“The demolition of the Snipe Inn is the next major phase of these works and will create a welcoming public space and entrance to the town centre from the bus station.

“With new trees, plants and places to take a break, it will create a vibrant link to our town centre park, new homes and the new Eton Star Sixth Form.”

AECOM is the planning consultant for the project. The team also includes ND Oliver & Co, BUJU Design Original, Wilde Civil Engineers, ArbTech, and E3P.

Good news for Oldham. Now there’s just the shopping centre to demolish in order to open up easy access to Union Street, and increase the footfall to the fast food shops.

Another pub gone

I seem to recall our Council Leader saying “there’s no money”. So how do we pay for these luxury improvements? Ah! By raising Council Tax.

Oldham council have recently announced that the land for the public park has been “sold” to the company that runs Eton school to build a new privately funded 6th form college. There was never any intention to develop the park in its original form. This was just another excuse to run down and demolish Oldham’s night time economy which has now passed the precipice of any hope of recovery.

There’s far too many fast food shops on union street some of them hardly have any customers and should be closed down.

Bad times when a historic pub needs to be demolished

What has been done to Oldham Town Centre can only be described as Criminal Damage. This once vibrant town has had the heart and more importantly the SOUL ripped out of it. Shame on Oldham Council.

Build a wall around it, flood it and start again, obviously with a new council on board.

There’s a real potential for Oldham to become the new Rusholme, but with more greenery. The council should consider the demographics and market the town for British Muslim business’. We will then see a day and night time economy thrive again with shisha bars, restaurants, takeaways, bazaars/ Middle Eastern/south Asian food markets, coffee houses, Islamic libraries etc.

This Pub Was The Heart And Soul Of Oldham

We don’t need more take aways.people don’t want to shop in Oldham anymore.its not a safe place.the area needs permanent security.

Absolutely ridiculous plan
What a waste of money doing things that will not be appreciated only destroyed
The council is in debt
Offering redundancy to council staff, cuts being made to the care and support of vulnerable people
Yet it’s OK to spend money on trees
Words fail me

It was one of the few places with footfall (£’s) and character. Let’s flatten it for a shrub and a vape shop.

The public consultation on this has been poor and driven through their own non intuitive website to get the answers wanted by a faction of politicians and regeneration officers who are flying blind.
