Outdoor brand takes 20,000 sq ft in Altrincham

Mountain Warehouse will take over the former Debenhams store in the Stamford Quarter.

The outdoor clothing and equipment retailer has signed to occupy the 20,710 sq ft unit on George Street in Altrincham town centre.

The store is Mountain Warehouse’s second in Greater Manchester and will open this autumn. The firm also has an outlet at Golden Days Garden Centre in Wigan.

Mountain Warehouse will join other retailers including Parasol, Utility, Holland Barrett, Next, Flannels, and Nationwide at Stamford Quarter.

The retail complex is owned and operated by a joint venture between Trafford Council and Bruntwood, which acquired the 367,000 sq ft complex in 2019.

James Tootle, head of retail and leisure at Bruntwood, said: “The arrival of Mountain Warehouse is a great addition to the Stamford Quarter and Greater Manchester and perfectly complements the existing retailers in the area.

“[The store] will sit alongside independent and national brands and will attract even more visitors to our growing community.”

Cllr Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford Council, added: “Mountain Warehouse joins the growing roster of businesses taking up residence in the Stamford Quarter.

“The range of businesses in the area makes it a dynamic retail and leisure hub to be enjoyed by visitors and residents of Altrincham alike. If you haven’t popped down to the Stamford Quarter yet, do make sure you check it out!”

High Street is dead apparently! This is market defining.

I’ll give this 18 months. Rents and business rates are too high and more people (not me)are buying off the web. I very much hope I’m wrong ☹️

I can’t see it lasting. They should turn that space into a museum of shopping. Have installations from various decades and talks from those with books to sell.
