Peel awards Port Salford infrastructure contract
Peel Group has selected John Sisk & Son as the winner of £39m of infrastructure works as part of the first phase of the Port Salford Intermodal Terminal.
The 200-acre site in Salford between the Manchester and Liverpool railway line and the Manchester Ship Canal has planning permission for a 1.6m sq ft road, rail and river distribution park in two phases.
Port Salford will have the capacity to double the number of container trains that currently serve the two terminals on Trafford Park.
The port will be able to handle two container ships simultaneously and move 200,000 pallets of cargo at any one time in the rail linked distribution buildings. It will be the only inland water served distribution park in the UK, Peel said.
Works may be part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The first phase being carried out by John Sisk covers a range of civil engineering works, including the construction of a Network Rail-managed train line.
Peel declined to comment.
Are Peel actually going to build the wharves or is this just a classic ruse to manipulate the planning process with the aim of building something else entirely long term? (See Whitebirk retail park or Event City as recent examples).
