Penkford School’s demolition waved through

St Helens Council granted approval for the razing of the vacant school that sits off Wharf Road, just outside of Newton-le-Willows.

The school has been closed since October 2022, when the children attending were moved to Willow Bank School off Mill Lane.

Its demolition was confirmed by a planning committee, on the officer’s recommendation.

Under the previous Labour government, the school was expected to be rebuilt under the Building Schools for the Future programme.

When the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats entered office in 2010, the plan was scrapped.

The site itself sits on Green Belt, but St Helens Council is keen to utilise the remaining car park and disabled ramps for future projects.

Demolition is expected to begin at the end of September.

Sutcliffe is a consultant on the demolition.
