Sainsbury’s to supply Wirral Waters residents

A planning application for a 4,300 sq ft Sainsbury’s Local store at Millers Quay has been lodged with Wirral Council.

If granted approval, the store will be built on the corner of Dock Road and Duke Street and will service the residents of the £130m Millers Quay development.

Construction would begin next year, with a target for completion by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

In line with Wirral Waters’ environmental credentials, sustainability will be a cornerstone of the store’s development – it will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and will be lit by LED lights throughout, according to planning documents.

The store will boost amenity provision for residents moving to the £4.5bn Wirral Waters scheme, being delivered by Peel Waters and the local council.

The first 150 apartments at Millers Quay were completed in July and eventually, the scheme will see 500 homes developed across six buildings on the River Mersey’s left bank.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, said: “This new Sainsbury’s store will be a very welcome addition to the regenerated Northbank neighbourhood.

“There will be a large residential community living along Northbank and it is important that we build in walkable, ancillary amenity provision to support this growing community, whilst also encouraging much better connections into those main retail centres at Birkenhead, Liscard, and Seacombe.”

He added: “To make this a successful place, this community needs access to a wide range of groceries and convenience foods.

“It is also important that the store – including in its design and construction – brings benefits to the local community, by providing jobs and training opportunities, but also that it meets the high standards of sustainability that we employ across the whole Wirral Waters development.”

The Sainsbury’s will also provide a free cash machine, an Argos, Tu clothing, and a Habitat.

The planning application has not yet been validated.
