Salford land deal to unlock university acoustics centre
A site off Wynne Street within the £2.5bn Crescent masterplan is being lined up as the location of a new home for one of the university’s specialisms.
Salford City Council’s property and regeneration committee will meet on 11 November to agree heads of terms with the university for the sale of the plot, paving the way for the construction of a new acoustics facility.
Salford University plans to demolish its Newton Building, where the acoustics faculty is currently located.
A new-build complex on the Wynne Street site will allow the university to be “recognised on an international stage as the leading UK centre in the field”, according to a city council report.
Located close to the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre and Salford Rise, the project will contribute towards building a “critical mass…and be a catalyst for further inward investment” in the Crescent innovation zone.
ECF is Salford City Council’s development partner for the 250-acre masterplan.
Sheppard Robson is designing the acoustics facility with Morgan Sindall Construction lined up to build it. The scheme will be funded by the university with support from the GMCA’s Investment Zone coffers.
A planning application for the scheme is expected before the end of the year.
