Salford seeks feedback on Mariners Canal revamp
Currently a space of low biodiversity and regular anti-social behaviour, proposals for the canal mark the first part of the city council’s plans to improve some of the outdoor areas in the Quays.
Salford City Council has identified Mariners Canal as one of five zones that need improvement in the creation of an ‘Inner Loop’.
The ‘Inner Loop’ would be a circular route around Salford Quays, beginning at The Lowry, passing over the Detroit Bridge, through to the Media City Footbridge, and along Trafford Wharfside before crossing the Millennium Bridge.
Landscape designer Exterior Architecture is working with Salford City Council on the proposals for Mariners Canal, which sits between Docks Eight and Nine.
Proposals split the canal into three sections: the northern gate, the main section, and the southern gate.
The northern gate is the opening of the Mariners Canal and overlooks the Eerie Basin. Plans for this section include seating for visitors, tree planting, and improved signage.
Proposals for the southern gate overlooking Ontario Basin, include improved signage and tree planting, as well as the installation of underpass lighting.
Additional lighting is proposed for the main section in attempts to reduce antisocial behaviour.
Cllr Mike McCusker, member for planning, transport, and sustainable development, said: “Salford Quays is one of the most successful waterside regeneration projects in Europe and is an attractive place to live, work, and visit.
“As part of its continuing development, there is an opportunity to change some of these outdoor spaces and improve their connections with each other.
“Mariners Canal is a very popular and well-used location and we’re considering how to introduce softer landscaping to support biodiversity, as well as reviewing how people use the space and find their way through the area.”
The online consultation will run until Monday 12 June and can be found at sccmarinerscanal.commonplace.
Other areas marked for improvement around the ‘Inner Loop’ are: The Lowry Terrace, Central Bay, Watersports Terrace, and Detroit Bridge.
Money needs to be spent in other parts of the city not media city all the time what happened to Salford precinct getting an up grade never a penny spent there just shops closing get your priorities right

Canals are for boats. How the hell are boats supposed to turn round when you are putting two blockages across the canals? Come on it’s not rocket science. Get residential boat owners on that canal and your antisocial behaviour will end- we achieved this at Fall Ings moorings in Wakefield and The Railway Dock in Hull. A residential presence means added security and a drastic reduction in crime- but it’s faff all good this project without a continuous cruising or turning circle, or a winding hole to turn around in. If you’re going to develop canalside areas learn about the boating community for Pete’s sake

Good news. Regarding the canal. It would be a great idea if some of the canals joining the basin could be involved. For example the Bolton and Bury canal. I know the B and B Canal is undergoing a lot of restoration. More help would be so advantageous.
