Skelmersdale Aldi gets green light

The discount supermarket will expand its reach in the Lancashire town after planning permission was granted for a new store to be built off High Street.

A 4,000 sq ft Toolstation shop will be created adjacent to the 14,000 sq ft Aldi.

The Harris Partnership has designed the plans for the three-acre site, formerly occupied by Pennylands House. The office building was demolished in 2021 following an arson attack.

A total of 140 parking spaces will be delivered by the scheme, including: nine disabled, 20 cycle, seven motorcycle, and four van spaces.

Avison Young is the planning consultant for the scheme, while I2 Analytical is advising on flood risk and drainage. Also on the project team is transport consultant CRA and landscape architect Vector.

The Aldi store will be Skelmersdale’s second, with a smaller store located within the town’s Concourse Centre.

Elsewhere, Aldi began work on a larger store in Widnes this month.

West Lancashire Council’s reference number for the Skelmersdale application is 2019/0366/FUL.

Good to hear. A Toolstation next door will also be a Godsend.
Crack on chaps!

While a Tool station store is welcome, Skelmersdale still needs a B&Q style/ superstore to go along with our yet to arrive railway station.

This could kill off all the shop’s in sandy Lane

Given that B&Q have announced the closure of some stores across the country, it’s unlikely, given the size of the town, they’d ever open one here.

Toolstation is very welcome as is a planned Aldi store as the one in the concourse is cramped and tired.

As for a train station, there already is one, but nobody uses it, because there’s no shuttle bus and no parking. So instead of day dreaming about a train arriving at the back of the concourse, just move the existing station a few hundred yards along the track to Pimbo, where there is enough land for a modern station, with a bus terminus and secure car parking. It would be trivial to build by comparison to the nonsense every pint pot politicos spews about the Skelmersdale train.

Fantastic news for the town! Resurface the roads next please 🙏

Railway road leading up to where this new Aldi will be feels like its been cluster bombed at certain points. Delivering a new retail zone with that bone-jarring drive up to it would be a shame but 100% what im expecting.

Why only 4 VAN parking spots? Surely at least 5p% of people using this place could well be van drivers? Are they going to get wheel clamps if they park else where

This will be great for the people of Old Skem, save them having to travel to the concourse.Later opening hours.Much needed.
