Tameside moves to activate Stalybridge Civic Hall after roof repairs

Forming part of the town’s cultural quarter, the grade two-listed building could be transformed into a community and events space under the council’s plans.

Work to repair the roof of Stalybridge Civic Hall completed earlier this year and the council’s attention has now turned to the interior of the building.

Tameside Council’s executive cabinet will meet next week to approve a £1m package of work to get the Trinity Street building ready to host events.

The medium turn plan is to host a series of events aimed at activating the space while a long-term business case for the future use of the building is worked up.

The council envisages the space being used for markets, food and drink events, music, theatre, comedy, art and arts/cultural exhibition events, according to a report to Tameside’s cabinet

Of the £1m earmarked for the project, £250,000 will come from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to make improvements to the office space within the building.

Plans to activate the civic hall, plus Astley Cheetham Art Gallery and Library, are part of a strategy to grow the town’s cultural offering.
