TfGM bus lane work gathers pace
Salford City Council is seeking a highways contractor to deliver the next phase of Greater Manchester's bus priority road scheme.
The £10m 15-month contract will create bus priority lanes on the A580 from Ellenbrook into Manchester city centre.
Balfour Beatty is currently starting on site to construct guided bus lanes with tracks for bus wheels between Leigh and Ellenbrook where buses will leave the special tracks to join the A580. The new lanes are due to be operational in 2015.
The work is part of Transport for Greater Manchester's £122m cross-city bus priority programme, funded by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund.
The bus priority scheme is aimed at improving services through Manchester linking areas of deprivation with conurbations, improving employment, social and educational opportunities, access to leisure and shopping. TfGM said the proposals will also reduce bus journey times, improve punctuality and reliability, and help to reduce the carbon impact of future traffic growth.
There are other bus lanes being introduced in Oxford Road, Manchester New Road, Rochdale Road, and further parts of Salford, Rochdale, Bolton and Wigan.
Please don’t tell me this tired, old, ill thought out scheme is still around. For God’s Sake let’s come up with a proper solution, anything except this rehashed old mess from the 80s…
