US burger giant takes step towards Blackpool opening

A vacant restaurant unit on the corner of the Promenade and Church Street is earmarked to house the American chain, which is taking a third stab at breaking the UK market.

Square Burgers, which trades as Wendy’s, has applied for permission to convert part of the former Vegas Diner in Blackpool into a Wendy’s. Vegas Diner closed in 2023.

The other part of the former restaurant will remain a shell until an occupier is confirmed.

The 3,000 sq ft Wendy’s will provide 78 seats for diners. There are more than 30 Wendy’s across the UK but only one currently operational in the North West, which is located in Kirkby.

The chain announced last year its intention to open a restaurant in Preston as well as the Blackpool outlet.

Wendy’s returned to the UK market in 2021 with a restaurant in Reading, the first of a planned 400, the company said at the time.

Wendy’s had previously had a presence on UK high streets in the 1980s and again in the 1990s.
