Vertical Salary Review: Wellbeing essential to attracting employees

Vertical Recruitment LogoPeople are more likely to change jobs for improved career prospects and an easier commute than for a bigger bonus or benefits package, according to the first Vertical Salary Review, produced by Vertical Recruitment in association with Place North West.

Employees ranked increased salary as the most important factor but an easier commute to work, greater work-life balance and career progression outweighed bonus and benefits, showing that wellbeing is now a priority for many professionals in property and construction.

James Adamson, director of Vertical Recruitment, commented: “We have observed first-hand the shift in candidate expectations and often see how some of the traditionally ‘softer’ benefits are key to recruiting and retaining staff.

Other findings in the study show that the average salary across the disciplines researched increased by at least 5% between 2015 and 2016, with building surveyors’ pay rocketing 22%.

The report also indicated a gender pay gap, with women earning on average £10,428 less than men.

The report studied salary changes and perceptions among professionals in nine disciplines: architects, architectural technicians, building services consultants (M&E), structural engineers, building surveyors, general practice surveyors, quantity surveyors, project managers and structural technicians.
