Wire Regeneration sells former Warrington stadium site
North Wales-based developer Edwards Homes has agreed to acquire the 5.5-acre site of Warrington RLFC’s former Wilderspool Stadium, which has outline consent for 160 homes.
Wire Regeneration secured the outline approval to redevelop the site into housing in 2019. Edwards Homes will now seek to obtain reserved matters consent and make a start on site.
The project is to be called Bevan Mews in honour of Brian Bevan, Warrington’s mid-20th century winger, who is the only man to be inducted into both the Australian and British rugby league halls of fame.
The scheme, which would feature 20% affordable provision, forms part of the Southern Gateway masterplan, which Wire Regeneration – a JV between Langtree and Warrington Council – is delivering. The zone could feature up to 1,000 homes once complete.
Wilderspool Stadium closed in 2003 when the club moved to the Halliwell Jones Stadium and was demolished in 2014.
“We’re delighted to have fulfilled another element of the Southern Gateway ambitions,” said Josh Downes, executive director of development at Langtree. “This will make an important contribution to Warrington’s housing needs and adds further momentum to our plans for the wider area.”
Legat Owen advised on the sale.
Director Will Rees said: “Edwards Homes are a great fit for this regeneration site, having successfully developed out a number of brownfield sites in the region. They are now working up their reserved matters application and are looking forward to contributing to the regeneration of the Southern Gateway site.”
Nice to see the Great Bev remembered in the development title. World record try scorer – 796 in career, with many of them scored there.
